Our five and twelve day residential courses are held at the University of Leicester. They run during the Easter holidays and at the beginning of the summer vacation. Senior Courses are aimed primarily at students who are preparing for GCSEs and A-levels and who have a strong interest in astronomy, space science and technology. Senior students can free iPhone 4 also gain a CREST Award by attending the extended summer course.
This year we are introducing our Junior Space School Course for those between 11 and 13, who have a strong interest in space.
The disciplines covered range from physics and astronomy to engineering and astronautics, planetary science and geology to environment studies and the humanities. While the financial assistance course are designed to include both lectures and practical activities, there is ample opportunity for socialising too. Opportunities are provided for students to meet space scientists and academics, as well as potential employers. Students also have the opportunity to win various competitions held during the course. The courses are subsidised by our sponsors and cost £260 per person for a five-day course and £475 for a twelve-day course. Group rates are also available for teams of six students accompanied by an adult (£1560), who wish to attend the five-day courses. Students can use there attendance at Space School UK in the summer to gain a CREST Award if they stay for 12 days.

Space School has been running twice per year since 1989. Although attendance is largely from the UK, students from other parts of the world take part in our courses too. Young people from Oman, the People’s Republic of China, Slovenia, Ireland, Norway and Japan have joined us in recent years.
Space School has the unique distinction of being the only summer-school for young people that is sponsored by British industry and the United Kingdom Government through the British National Space Centre (BNSC).
The success of Space School UK has led to a sister Space School being established in the People’s Republic of China by Beijing Planetarium and supported by the British Council in China. The first Space School China ran in the summer of 2002 and second School ran in August 2003.
Senior Space School
All applicants should have a good knowledge of science and mathematics to Key Stage 3 level. The most important qualification is to be enthusiastic and interested in all aspects of Space and Space Exploration.
The course fee for the five-day residential course at the University reflects the generous subsidy from UK Industry and the BNSC.
The programme is designed to be intensive and to enrich and enthuse course participants whilst stretching and consolidating their understanding and perceptions of space. There will be lectures and supervised set work from breakfast to bedtime. One day will be devoted to a visit to industry to see satellites under construction.

Please note that a deposit is required with the application form, with final payment to be made at least TWO WEEKS before the course starts. The courses are designed to reflect a balance between academic lectures and practical exercises. A typical Space School includes more than a dozen lectures, six to eight practical sessions and a visit to a space industry facility. Here, students will see spacecraft under construction and undertake a specially-created, entertaining and mind-stretching problem solving exercise.
A CREST Award can be achieved when attending the summer Space School for 12 days.
Meanwhile, at Leicester University, students will attend lectures in the University’s main buildings and have an opportunity to see some of the research and other work of the Space Research Centre. Some of the practicals, such as the ever-popular rocketry, are run as a team competition.
